Avalon Green Building Wins Prestigious Emerald Award
Avalon Master Builder and SAIT Polytechnic are the winners of a 2014 Emerald Award in the category of Public Education and Outreach for the collaborative Discovery 5 Net Zero Home project.
Emerald awards are given each year to companies, individuals, non-profit organizations and governments to recognize and reward outstanding environmental initiatives in three major areas: environmental stewardship, biodiversity preservation and educational initiatives. Each year hundreds of organizations and projects are nominated for Emerald Awards.
“The Discovery 5 project is an advanced research and development project allowing SAIT and Avalon to explore the advancing science of Net Zero technology, while providing real-world, real-time solutions for building increasingly sustainable homes in our current market,” explains Chris Williams, General Manager of Avalon Master Builder.
Now owned by Williams and his Wife, Discovery 5 House continues as a teaching tool for SAIT and the hundreds of visitors who tour the home each year. Located in the central Calgary community of Altadore, Discovery 5 represents how built green homes can blend esthetically into a contemporary vision of neighbourhoods providing a comfortable and stylish living environment for home owners.
The esthetically pleasing Discovery 5 House is designed with four key operating systems which interact with each other to achieve Net Zero results. The building envelope, the mechanical system, the renewable energy system and water resource management all play a role in the comfort and efficiency of the home. It is a complex and fascinating system that ultimately takes this home off the electricity grid and reduces 94% of its water usage each year.
Our mission at Avalon Master Builders is to build Net Zero homes at no extra cost to homeowners. We believe in today, and passionately work towards a stronger tomorrow for everyone.
