So often we come up with these great “New Years Resolutions” and then we struggle to stay motivated. Why is this? We work hard for a couple weeks and then we gradually shift back into our old habits. Here are some practical steps for achieving the goals you set for yourself in 2015:
Acknowledge what you accomplished in 2014
Set aside time to reflect on 2014 and write down all of your significant accomplishments in detail. Whether you choose to journal or take a nature walk, this time is for you to acknowledge your achievements. It’s important to recognize the hard work you have done before determining what you want next year to look like.
Determine what you want to achieve in 2015 and why
Be realistic about what you want to achieve, but don’t be afraid to dream big. People don’t fail to reach their goals because they are too ambitious, they fail because they don’t have a plan. Most importantly, determine why you want to achieve these goals. The sooner you begin to explore what motivates you towards certain outcomes, the sooner you will make better decisions and experience more fulfillment.
Commit your goals to writing
Writing down your goals will force you to clarify what you want and then motivate you to take action. Writing goals down and reviewing them on a regular basis will provoke you to take the next step to achieving that goal. Do not make a long list of things you want to do because you will get distracted. Research shows we are not able to focus on more than 7-10 goals at a time.
Visualize what you want to accomplish every morning
Mastering a morning ritual is key for success. You need to start your day by setting an intention. Figure out what you want to accomplish throughout the day and visualize what it will look like to get to that place. Visualization is a powerful tool goal setters use to reach the outcome they want. You need to establish a specific plan each day to take you closer to your desired outcome. You can’t go on living your life the way you always have, or you will get the same results as you always have.
Re-examine your goals periodically throughout the year
It’s important to periodically go through the goals you have set for yourself in order to track your progress. At the end of each month look back and see if your goals still make sense, and if they don’t adjust them. It’s okay if you decide to no longer pursue a goal, as long as you are making the decision with intention, and not out of emotion.
