The Avalon team is exactly that – a team. We’re united by the desire to build great homes, and we’re committed to having a lot of fun along the way. Unfortunately none of us have any super powers. At least not that we’re aware of.
Ryan Scott, President & CEO
Instead of bedtime stories, Ryan’s father, Steve, the co-founder of Avalon, would show him blueprints. Apparently it worked like a charm. Ryan not only slept great, but he also developed a knack for the family business. There aren’t many jobs at Avalon Ryan hasn’t taken a crack at, from hauling 4x4s, onto construction manager, sales, general manager, and now CEO and president. Understanding the company from all angles has given Ryan a huge advantage, and the benefits are evidenced by the great success Avalon has achieved over the years. Ryan is recognized by the industry as being one of the leading sources on sustainable building, and is regularly asked to share his expertise through various speaking functions. He also strongly believes in giving back to the community and often fills weekends volunteering and working on various other philanthropic projects.
Chris Williams, Vice President
Before joining Avalon as general manager and partner in 2008, Chris was kind of a nerd. Okay, that’s not true. He wasn’t nerdy, but he did work for more than a decade in the IT industry. As the director of project services for one of Calgary’s largest IT consulting companies, he was responsible for more than 80 staff members and revenues of more than $12 million. No small task, which is why he was an easy choice when it came time for Avalon to pick a general manager. As evidenced by his career history Chris’s talents are many, but perhaps where he shines the brightest is when he’s managing a team. He knows how to create an environment where people can do their best work by ensuring employees are challenged and have room for career growth. Along with a talent for bringing out the best in people, Chris also works hard to bring out the best in the home building industry. He works closely with Canada’s Green Building Council as a member of the Technical Advisory Sub Committee, as well as with the Calgary Home Builders Association’s Sustainable Builders Council and Condo/Multifamily Committee, and a few other net zero related committees.
Terra Davidson, Sales, Marketing & Interior Design
Terra Davidson is a veteran in the homebuilding industry. After graduating with a major in marketing, Terra joined the Consumer Strategies Group where she cut her teeth in new home marketing planning. Not one to rest on her laurels, Terra joined the Calgary Home Builders Association as the managing director of the newly formed Built Green™ program. Here she was instrumental in helping the Association launch this important initiative to the home building community. Having kept a watchful eye on Avalon’s activities in the industry, Terra knew it was the kind of place where her skills could be put to even greater use. She couldn’t have been more right. She started at Avalon as the brand manager, added service manager to her job description, and then sales manager and interior designer. Oh yeah! She’s also a partner in the company. A theory has circulated around the office that Terra might be twins, which is how she’s able to do so many different jobs. So far it hasn’t been substantiated.
Neil Hawkins, Construction Manager
Neil started out as a carpenter and his passion for building flourished from there. Neil had great success at large construction companies and also enjoyed working as a construction supervisor directly for families. There is no app for all things that Neil manages day-to-day to ensure our customers are happy customers when they take possession. Neil also realized Avalon was the best place to bring his passion for sustainable building to life. We give Neil a 5-star rating on building, teamwork and measuring twice and cutting once.
Robert Lowther, CFO
Rob filled spreadsheets and worked his calculator into a frenzy for the construction, manufacturing, and mining industries for many years prior to joining Avalon. We have no idea how Rob does what he does, but we do know that he’s garnered the respect of everyone he’s ever worked with. As evidenced by the fact that he spent many years as a project controller for the Mosaic Company, where he worked on potash mining projects with budgets of well over $500M. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Baseball Alberta and for the Calgary Public Library, which is really handy if your books are ever overdue.
Christine Scott, Partner
Wearing many hats over the years, Christine has steered Avalon through smooth and rocky seas. Starting with the company as a hostess at 17, sales and marketing was in her blood. She is, after all, the daughter of founders, Steve and Joyce. At 19, with a diploma in sales and marketing from SAIT in her back pocket, Christine moved to Red Deer where she and her brother, Ryan, re-opened Avalon Central Alberta. Focusing on customer service, Christine revamped the warranty, sales, and construction processes winning the company many awards. Christine answered the call when Steve was ready to retire and returned to Calgary as President of Avalon. Always willing to take on a new adventure, Christine is happily a wife and mother to twin boys. In between motherhood, cross country running competitions, and the occasional introspective sailing voyage, Christine still finds time to share her valued knowledge and experience with the Avalon team.
