June 19, 2008 – Avalon Master Builder partners with ATCO Gas, Carma Developers and Ener-West Geo-Energy Services Inc. to build some of the most energy efficient homes in Canada using renewable energy

Fourty home pilot project to use Geo and Solar thermal technology for heating, cooling and domestic hot water needs

Avalon Master Builder, celebrating 25 years of home building, will be building some of the most energy efficient homes in Canada using renewable energy under the newly launched home division EMERGE. In partnership with ATCO Gas and Ener-West Geo-Energy Services Inc., the 40 homes, located in Carma Developers McKenzie Towne in south east Calgary will have all of their space heating and cooling requirements and a portion of their hot water needs supplied by geothermal and solar thermal technology. Avalon's EMERGE division along with the pilot project was officially launched today at the "Green- Breaking" ceremony.

"EMERGE Homes bring us one step closer to our vision of Net-Zero homes. These homes will be built to near Net-Zero standards making them some of the most energy efficient homes in Canada. "said Ryan Scott, President and CEO of Avalon Master Builder. "We are able to do this because of our great partners ATCO Gas, Carma and Ener-West. We anticipate EMERGE home buyers have a concern for the environment and want to reduce their environmental footprint. People will be amazed that we are offering everything at a similar price to other homes in the area."

Each home will be equipped with a geothermal loop (which utilizes heat from the ground) and a heat pump to deliver space heating and cooling needs designed and installed by Ener-West Geo-Energy Services Inc. In addition, a solar hot water heating system will be installed to provide a portion of the home's hot water needs and natural gas will be used to satisfy the balance. Natural gas will also be available for home appliances such as fireplaces, barbeques and gas ranges. The renewable energy systems will be owned and maintained by ATCO Gas to ensure they are functioning at the highest standard.

These homes will not only offer exceptional energy efficiency with almost no green house gas emissions, they will meet the highest Built GreenT standards of water conservation and sustainable building practices. Avalon's vision is to build net-zero homes at no additional cost to the consumer by 2015. More information about Avalon Master Builder and our green vision can be found on our website www.avalonmasterbuilder.com.

"Carma Developers is very proud to partner with Avalon Master Builder on this pilot project as it will offer a unique opportunity for consumers to practice sustainable living right here in McKenzie Towne." Says David Allen, VP at Carma Developers.

February 13, 2007 – Avalon Awarded Grant from CMHC to build third Discovery House

Avalon Master Builder and Avalon Central Alberta, in partnership, have been selected as winners of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) EQuilibrium sustainable housing competition to help us build our 3rd Discovery Home. CMHC’s new EQuilibrium replaces the working name of Net-Zero Energy Healthy Housing. The name has changed, the goal has not.

Avalon is a pioneer in eco-smart building and has made a commitment to build a demonstration house every year to test the most current practices in environmentally sustainable and energy efficient home building technologies. In 2006, Avalon’s 2nd Discovery Home, combined state of the art energy efficient construction techniques and equipment with renewable solar energy to provide energy for use in this home. This was Avalon’s first NET-ZERO power home.

Avalon’s 3rd Discovery Home will take it another step further: Discovery III will produce as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis. The home will feature an advanced greywater recycling system to reduce reliance on the municipal water system. An innovative wall and window system will further reduce overall power consumption while making the home more comfortable both summer and winter. Our Discovery III will serve as a blueprint for future energy efficient construction.

Our vision is to build 100% of our homes as EQuilibrium homes by the year 2015 at no additional cost to consumers.

Our third Discovery Home is currently in the planning stages. We will post our progress here as we move forward. Register here if you want us to keep you informed.

June 27, 2006 - One Step Closer

Avalon Master Builder opened their 2nd Discovery Home for public viewing in Red Deer Alberta on June 27, 2006. The Discovery Home was built to demonstrate the latest in environmentally sustainable and energy efficient technology home building practices. This is Avalon’s first NET-ZERO power home. Avalon Master Builder has made a commitment to build a demonstration house every year to test the most current practices in environmentally sustainable and energy efficient home building technologies.

The 2006 Avalon Discovery Home combines state of the art energy efficient construction techniques and equipment with renewable solar energy to provide energy for use in this home. Handouts and displays throughout the home illustrate how these systems function.

The 2006 Discovery Home is not only an energy efficient Built Green™ home, but it also produces its own power. Just like a typical home, a Net ZERO power home is connected to and takes power from the local utility. But unlike a typical home, The 2006 Discovery Home makes enough power to send some back to the utility so that annually the home produces enough power to offset the amount purchased.

Avalon Master Builder is on a mission to build 100% of our homes as Net-Zero energy homes by 2015 for no additional cost to the consumer while creating homes people love to live in. With the 2nd annual Discovery Home, we’re one step closer.

“Save money now. Save the environment for your kids. That’s why we build GREEN. We believe we have an obligation to build homes that use less of the world’s resources so that there’s something left for future generations.”

Christine Scott-Nyuli
President
Avalon Master Builder

In 2002 Avalon joined Built Green™ Alberta and is a certified Built Green™ Builder. Avalon was the first multi-family member of the Built Green™ program and in 2005, committed to building 100% of their homes as Built Green™ homes.

“We are gratified by the public response to Avalon’s exploration and commitment to GREEN home building technologies. It supports what we believe is our corporate responsibility to future generations and encourages our continued research.”

We took away two awards at the recently held CHBA – Central Alberta's Awards of Distinction. Avalon Master Builder was named 2006 Builder of the Year and once again awarded the Customer Choice Award (large volume) for customer service excellence. While we love all recognition of the work we do, the Customer Choice Award is particularly gratifying because that’s when our customers vote. These awards are an annual celebration of new home and renovation sales and marketing excellence in Central Alberta. Thanks to our staff, partners and customers making it happen.
